Transportation Security Officer Job Overview
Thank you for your interest in employment with TSA. As a Transportation Security Officer (TSO), you will play a vital role in supporting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) mission. This document highlights the unique operational requirements and compensation plan.
Local Airport Details
- Location: BFL Meadows Field, Bakersfield Airport, Bakersfield, CA
- Maintains a seven days per week flight schedule.
- Peak times are Monday through Sunday:
- 4:00 a.m. – 5:00 a.m.
- 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
- Screening operations may not be temperature controlled.
Work Schedules
TSO work schedules depend on operational needs and may include non-traditional shifts, weekends, and holidays. Due to the nature of the job, flexibility to accommodate personal commitments is limited.
- Part-time Positions Available:
- 20 hours per week, five (5) days of four (4) hours each day.
Sign-On Bonus
Currently, this location is not offering a sign-on bonus.
Commuter Details
- Onsite parking for TSA employees is available free of charge.
- Limited public transportation; no subsidies for transportation are offered at BFL.

Promotional Potential
Under the career ladder system for TSOs, new officers can achieve:
- Up to a 67% increase from the starting base salary over 5 years.
Travel and Training Requirements
- Employment contingent upon successfully completing required training, which may include three (3) weeks of travel in a full-time duty status.
- New hire training varies but may require up to six (6) weeks and occurs away from the employee's airport of record.
Dress Code
TSO uniforms are provided; there are restrictions on certain personal accessories and grooming while in uniform.
Active Duty Military
If you are active military, a reservist, or in the National Guard, you must be discharged or on terminal leave before beginning employment with TSA.
