Transportation Security Officer Job Overview
Thank you for your interest in employment with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). If you successfully complete the Transportation Security Officer (TSO) candidate evaluation process and are selected for a position, you will play a vital role in supporting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) mission.
Local Airport Details
- Location: Santa Maria Public Airport, Santa Maria, CA
- Operational Hours: 14 hours a day, seven days per week
- Peak Times: Monday through Sunday from 4 a.m. – 7 a.m.
- Screening Operations: Located inside the terminal, may or may not be temperature controlled.
Work Schedules
TSO work schedules are based on the operational needs of the airport and may include non-traditional shifts, weekends, and holidays. Due to the nature of the job, virtually no flexibility can be offered to accommodate personal commitments or schedules.
Part-Time Positions
- Hours: 20 hours per week, five days of four hours per day
- Shift Options: Morning, afternoon, and evening shifts available.
Sign-On Bonus
This location is not offering a sign-on bonus at this time. Recruitment incentive amount is subject to change and will be determined at the time of final job offer.
Commuter Details
- Onsite parking is available for TSA employees at no cost.
- Public transportation is available with subsidies offered at SMX.

Promotional Potential
Under the career ladder system for TSOs, new officers have the potential to reach a significant salary increase:
- One Year: Up to 25% Base Salary Increase
- Two Years: Up to 52% Base Salary Increase
- Three Years: Up to 57% Base Salary Increase
- Four Years: Up to 62% Base Salary Increase
- Five Years: Up to 67% Base Salary Increase
Travel and Training Requirements
Upon hiring, your employment will be contingent upon successfully completing required classroom and on-the-job training, which may require up to six weeks of travel in a full-time duty status.
Dress Code
TSO uniforms are provided. There are restrictions on certain accessories and grooming while in uniform.
