DEFINITION: Supervises a crew of helicopter mechanics and participates in the more difficult work of repairing airframes, engines, components, and other appliances associated with aircraft owned and/or operated by the County. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS: Positions allocable to this class report to the Chief, Helicopter Maintenance at Fire Department’s Air Operations/Sheriff Department’s Aero Bureau and supervise Helicopter Mechanics and Senior Helicopter Mechanics, and may supervise other air operations support maintenance staff. Incumbents supervise and participate in the technical maintenance, repairs, overhauls, and alterations including airframe, powerplant, rotor, or appliance of reciprocating and/or turbine-powered aircraft in either Sheriff’s or Fire Department’s air operations. Incumbents must possess expert knowledge of the methods in locating and diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, structural and other aircraft systems issues. Incumbents in this class must have expert knowledge of operation and preventive maintenance requirements of the aircraft to be maintained. This class has responsibility for determining work priorities, assigning tasks, maintaining the flow of work, and may assist in estimating and planning repair jobs. This class frequently lifts more than 50 pounds and regularly climbs on aircraft and ladders while carrying tools, equipment, and parts. EXAMPLES OF DUTIESSupervises, assigns, inspects, and evaluates the work of Helicopter Mechanics, Senior Helicopter Mechanics, and support maintenance staff.Supervises and participates in disassembling and reassembling airframes, engines, and other component parts including main and tail rotor assemblies and gear boxes to maintain equipment in airworthy condition.Supervises and participates in all scheduled hourly and/or calendar inspections as well as unscheduled maintenance.Inspects work in progress and upon completion, for technical accuracy and compliance with aircraft specifications.Instructs subordinates on new repair methods and provides technical information on the repair of new equipment.Researches the disposition and status of maintenance and repair of aircraft by assessing and utilizing an automated system.Participates in periodic refresher training to engines, airframes, components or appliance repairs, or related topics.Drives County vehicles to respond to helicopter maintenance needs in the field and/or remote locations, e.g., daily inspections, troubleshooting helicopter discrepancies and other repairs as required.May prepare, maintain, and complete reports, including those required by the Federal Aviation Administration. Posting Details Rotary Wing Aircraft Maintenance Technicians (RMWAMT's) are responsible for ensuring department aircraft are maintained in an airworthy status in accordance with manufacturer and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. The Department of Public Safety, New Mexico State Police, is seeking a qualified air frame and Power Plant Mechanic to administer the New Mexico State Police Aviation Maintenance program and maintain the NMSP aircraft consisting of an Airbus Hl 45D2 helicopter. How does it get done? The key responsibilities will be to perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance inspections and/or repairs as needed on departmental aircraft and be responsible for the scheduling and execution of inspections on the aircraft, engine and/or appliance, as required by the manufacturer. The selected individual must be willing to travel statewide, to include austere locations, to perform on-site aircraft maintenance and/or repair, if necessary, based on mission requirements, and utilize ladders, scaffolds and hoists/lifts on occasion. Some inspections may require using x-ray and magnetic inspection equipment to check for invisible cracks. Essential Job Functions CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS: Positions allocable to this class report to the Chief, Helicopter Maintenance at Fire Department’s Air Operations/Sheriff Department’s Aero Bureau and supervise Helicopter Mechanics and Senior Helicopter Mechanics, and may supervise other air operations support maintenance staff. Incumbents supervise and participate in the technical maintenance, repairs, overhauls, and alterations including airframe, powerplant, rotor, or appliance of reciprocating and/or turbine-powered aircraft in either Sheriff’s or Fire Department’s air operations. Incumbents must possess expert knowledge of the methods in locating and diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, structural and other aircraft systems issues. Incumbents in this class must have expert knowledge of operation and preventive maintenance requirements of the aircraft to be maintained. This class has responsibility for determining work priorities, assigning tasks, maintaining the flow of work, and may assist in estimating and planning repair jobs. This class frequently lifts more than 50 pounds and regularly climbs on aircraft and ladders while carrying tools, equipment, and parts. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Supervises, assigns, inspects, and evaluates the work of Helicopter Mechanics, Senior Helicopter Mechanics, and support maintenance staff. Supervises and participates in disassembling and reassembling airframes, engines, and other component parts including main and tail rotor assemblies and gear boxes to maintain equipment in airworthy condition. Supervises and participates in all scheduled hourly and/or calendar inspections as well as unscheduled maintenance. Inspects work in progress and upon completion, for technical accuracy and compliance with aircraft specifications. Instructs subordinates on new repair methods and provides technical information on the repair of new equipment. Researches the disposition and status of maintenance and repair of aircraft by assessing and utilizing an automated system. Participates in periodic refresher training to engines, airframes, components or appliance repairs, or related topics. Drives County vehicles to respond to helicopter maintenance needs in the field and/or remote locations, e.g., daily inspections, troubleshooting helicopter discrepancies and other repairs as required. May prepare, maintain, and complete reports, including those required by the Federal Aviation Administration. May assist in the operation of a tool and stock room, including the requisition, receipt and issuance of parts, equipment, tools and supplies. May prepare estimates on extent and cost of aircraft repairs and recommends to management on the need to repair or replace aircraft and other equipment. May supervise a traveling field unit responsible for work at various locations throughout the County. May perform the work of the Chief, Helicopter Maintenance in his or her absence. Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Option I: One year of experience providing technical guidance to a crew of Helicopter Mechanics as a Senior Helicopter Mechanic or inspecting maintenance performed on airframes, engines, and other components of aircraft owned and/or operated by Los Angeles County to ensure compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration’s regulations and manufacturers’ maintenance manuals and directives as a Helicopter Maintenance Inspector. Option II: Five years of experience with responsibility for completing major and minor repairs to return Los Angeles County owned and/or operated aircraft to airworthy condition as a Helicopter Mechanic. LICENSE: A valid Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic's License issued by the Federal Aviation Administration. A valid Inspection Authorization Certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration.
